Problem
My smart-home devices were spread across multiple ecosystems, each with its own app, controls, and limitations. Lighting, wall switches, media devices, and automations did not work together in a consistent way. The biggest challenge was creating smart lighting that still felt natural to use. The recessed lights supported brightness, color temperature, and RGB effects, but cutting power at the wall would disconnect them from the network. Relying only on an app was also not practical for family members or guests. I needed a system that could: Centralize devices from different manufacturers Preserve familiar physical wall controls Support advanced lighting routines Respond quickly and reliably Continue expanding without being tied to one vendor
Solution
I built a centralized home automation system using Home Assistant. Home Assistant acts as the control layer for the home, connecting Govee recessed lights, Zooz Z-Wave switches, media devices, lighting groups, dashboards, and custom automations. The Zooz switches operate in smart-bulb mode, which keeps continuous power flowing to the recessed lights. Instead of physically cutting power, button presses are sent to Home Assistant as Z-Wave events. This allowed me to create custom controls such as: Single-tap lighting toggles Press-and-hold dimming Multi-tap brightness shortcuts Whole-floor lighting control Warm and cool lighting modes Scene activation from physical switches I also created YAML-based automations that gradually adjust brightness and color temperature throughout the day. Daytime lighting can be brighter and cooler, while evening lighting becomes warmer and dimmer. The automations account for manual changes so the system does not immediately override someone who adjusts the lights. Home Assistant also provides centralized controls for the home entertainment system, including the television, NVIDIA Shield, game consoles, streaming services, and media applications.
Impact
The finished system provides a unified smart-home experience without sacrificing simple, familiar controls. Family members and guests can use the wall switches normally, while more advanced functionality remains available through multi-tap actions, dashboards, scenes, and scheduled automations. The system has: Reduced dependence on separate manufacturer apps Improved lighting consistency throughout the day Preserved reliable physical controls Made multiple devices behave like one connected system Reduced repetitive manual adjustments Created a flexible foundation for future automations The project also strengthened my experience with Home Assistant, Z-Wave, YAML, event-driven automation, device integrations, networking, and self-hosted infrastructure. Most importantly, the technology stays in the background. The house responds naturally without requiring people to understand the systems making it work.
